Doing It All

by Staci Louise Smith

I get to make beads and jewelry full time.  I am also mom to three beautiful children, three rescue dogs, a rescue parrot, and wife to a self employed contractor (and let me tell you, he is BUSY and works many many long hours too).

(kids at Christmas, cause yeah, they don't often sit still together for pictures all at once anymore)

On the other hand, these guys all sit anytime there is food out.

People ask me all the time how I do it all.

I assure you, I don't.

There is always something not done- usually cleaning.  And not even because there isn't time, it's really because I just don't enjoy it.  So it is always LAST on the list.

My kids are VERY helpful and do wash and help with everyday chores like vacuuming and dishes and such.

(here are the kids helping to shovel last winter- they really pitch in!)

However, even without hopes of doing it all, my business MUST bring in income.  And if you are self employed in the arts, you know we put twice as much time in as most would for the income we make.  For me, I don't mind, because I would rather do this then anything else.  However, I have had to find ways to "do more".  I still don't do it all, but I am learning to plan better in the studio, and do multiple things at once.

For instance, I had to make beads to send to Bead and Button with Marsha Neal and Nikki Thornburg (they will be selling both their beads with a little bit of mine thrown in at booth #608 ).

(shamless plug- if you are going to B&B stop by and see Marsha and Nikki- all of our beads are divine together!!!!)
Here is a pair of earrings I made with my earring components and Nikki's headpins!!!

And here is a necklace I made with Nikki's headpins, my focal and Marsha's accent beads!!!

(yeah, I squeezed making those samples in too!!)
Keeps me from being bored, right?

Anyhow, I also have a free class I need to work on for Craft Art Edu.  I also needed some blog material for future blogs.

sooooooo.............................

As I was making the beads, I made the items for my free class, taking pictures along the way.  As I painted the beads, I painted and photographed for my class.  I also found a great topic for a blog- on using ONE mold and how you can still make an original bead each time.  (FYI- that is another post, and the molds I made were to save me............TIME!)

I try to do most of the labor intensive stuff in the studio and office while the kids are in school or after they go to bed.  Because once the kids come home, its help with homework, dinner, and time with them!

So I am learning.  Sometimes I can't multi-task.  Some things need all my one on one attention.  but I try, that is all I can do.
There are days I don't get to set foot in the studio or office.  And you know what?  That's fine.  Because I do all the shopping and cooking around here.  Kids have Dr. appts and dogs need to play.  I haven't found perfect balance, but I am always trying to make my time more efficient.

So how do you "do it all?"  Do you have areas you are proud that you have streamlined?  Are you still feeling overwhelmed and see area's you feel you could improve on?  (there are always area's we could improve on, right?)

Because we only have two arms and one brain, right?

I know for me one of the things that takes my time is sheer lack of desire to do something I don't feel like doing.  Since I work from home, I can get very bored.  There are some tasks I plain old don't feel like doing on certain days.  So I find that I then do other things that are not of top priority, to avoid said task.  So I have found that I need to sit down and tell myself that this is a business, and I am at work, and if I punched a clock I would HAVE to get all this done before 4.  Sometimes that helps me to put it in perspective.  Sometimes I just end up cleaning out drawers.....................

Wrap Bracelet at Bead and Button Show

I have been so busy working on these Braided Silk Bead Bracelets getting the kits ready, that I backed myself up against a wall for Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, WI next week!

I've been working part time at Sarafina Art House in Elkton, MD and one of the women that I work with (the amazing Kyla) was kind enough to film and edit a video tutorial for me that I could put up on You Tube.

It's my first time doing a video tutorial, and I was a bit nervous - but it was a LOT of fun.
Just like teaching a class says Kyla - good advice!

I have yet to update my website, but did get the kits into my Etsy shop (boy - this business end sure is a lot of work!)

I've even got a hashtag so when people make a bracelet, they can post a pic of it with #MNSBeadedBracelet and it will show up.
I am mostly curious to see what art beads each person chooses to use as a closure bead!

And next Tuesday I will be arriving in Milwaukee, WI for the Bead & Button show.

Tuesday night, June 2 from 9:30-11:30pm there is a Moonlight Madness at the Hyatt Hotel where a bunch of vendors, including myself, will be selling a small amount of work - like a preview of what is to come for the main show June 5-7 (the show preview night is June 4) held in the Milwaukee Convention Center.

See what is going on through social media: #BeadandButtonShow
I can be found as: Marsha Neal Studio in booth #608 at the main show, along with Nikki of Thornburg Bead Studio.

My sister has been over this week helping me bag up some small special show bead mixes to go with the variety of silks that I will have with me at the show.
I am going to feature these bracelet kits as a make and take for people to do at the show.

I am figuring that there is going to be a mecca of handmade beads for people to buy and match up - make a bracelet in a few minutes, then wear it to show it off!

If you are going out there, make sure to swing by and say Hi!

I'm off to get into the studio to glaze more beads - one can never have too many beads for a huge show like this!

Where Does The Time Go?

It seems like just last week I was making tons of beads to fill trays for the Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, WI.
Here is a quick shot of some of the table where I had my work (shared a corner booth with Nikki of Thornburg Bead Studio).
I just loved all of the colors on our tables!!!
And Brenda Schweder (Now That's A Jig) had a huge display on the 2nd floor displaying collaborative works from many artists. Loved this one a lot!
I got there early in the morning, and the sun was shining bright through the windows so I didn't get a really great shot of Staci Smith's award winning designs. But they were stunning!!!
After a week of travel to see family after the show, and home to have summer camps starting, I am trying to find the time to make more of these flower inspired mandala beads with multiple colors as they were a huge hit at the show!
And I have some custom work to get underway and had to make sure to recycle some chocolate clay to make sure I have enough ready to go and workable... Break down, spritz, smoosh back together when it is wet enough - messy but fun work!
And here are some of the porcelain see pod collector vases.
Lots went home with people at Bead & Button and I am curious to see if anyone has them hanging yet (or maybe using them for a different project).
The shapes really remind me of tornado funnel clouds as I am trying to figure out a way to categorize them so I can get them up onto my website.
I love that time flies by when you are indeed having fun and have your health...
But I really look forward to some time to actually sit and focus for a few hours at a time instead of a broken up hour here and there. I love the energy of coming back from a show with so many ideas and potential collaborations!

Oh, the possibilities...
I'm off and running! Hope you all are in good health and getting some creative time in!
And maybe an Etsy shop update in a couple of weeks once these are glazed...

Beads Beads Beads

by Staci L. Smith

The Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee is underway right now.  I don't know about you, but I sure wish I was there, either to vend, shop, or just take it all in!

Posts are coming in from Facebook of all the cool artists, and all the fabulous beads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, for those of us who cannot attend, I thought I'd direct you to some beady folks whom make really great stuff, and are having sales this weekend.  Yeah, its not B&B, but we will take what we can get.

Suburban Girl Studio has 20% off in her etsy shop through this evening only!  Use code MRELLIOT to receive your discount.

This is one of the many beads of hers I adore.

Genea Beads is running a sale too.  You can get all the details on her blog, here.  And you will want to check it out, because there is a giveaway involved.  Use code yay4beads15 in her Etsy shop to save 15% off your order.  Sale also ends tonight at midnight.

Here are a few of her new things

I, Artisan Accents, am not running a sale, but I did just list some new stuff in the shop, and will list some more today.  Anyone who ordered Friday or orders this weekend will get an extra special free bead with their purchase!

You can shop for my beads here.

Here are some of my new items in, and going into the shop!  I made some fun new sugar skulls and some random beads.  I just sat and played this time, no rhyme and reason.

I know its not the same as a bead show.  It is no Bead and Button.  However, there is also no line.  And you won't pay for gas or airfare.  LOL!

Enjoy!
