Ornaments and a Product Review

by Staci Louise Smith

Every year I make ornaments from polymer clay.  This year I was sorely behind.  I just couldn't figure out what I wanted to do.  Last year I made my usual styles into ornaments, and did a run of Blue Moons to commemorate the blue moon that occurred in December.

This year, nothing was coming to me.  I thought, how can I commemorate this year?  Its been quite a year, with the election and all the great singer songwriter poets we have lost.
And then it hit me.

I wanted to make some ornaments to embrace peace, love, and acceptance.

First I decided to honor Leonard Cohen, and make something inspired by his song Anthem.  I love the line, "there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in".  The other part of that inspiration was Karen's post that included a picture of this sculpture by Paige Bradley, which I LOVE.

So I decided to make a heart, with gold shimmer in the cracks, and wire wings.
I added the lyrics and dated them as well

Then I made some star ornaments, to honor David Bowie, aka Ziggy Stardust, aka Starman

On the back I wrote "turn and face the strange" because I think it really fits for every single day of our lives. They are also dated.

I also wanted to make something to do with Peace.  This election has caused so much chaos.  So I made a new design, a peace sign, with wooden textured parts.  It was really fun to make.  On the back, trying to stick with lyrics, I wrote, "Imagine all the people living life in peace".

So, my ornaments are finally done and listed in my destash group. (How my destash group workds: just click that link, ask to join if you are not a member, and then claim items in comments.  I invoice you for them and ship)
Better late then never, right?  (on top of the normal holiday rush and business, I have had sick kids.  I am so behind).

Anyhow...................since I made a new ornament, I had to make a mold for it!  Thus, the review portion of this blog....

I have been wanting to try that molding plastic, the one that you put in warm water and mold it.  I thought it may capture detail better, or yet, last longer then my typical two part silicone molds.

I purchased this brand, InstaMorph, from Amazon.
I followed the instructions carefully.

I used water that was 150 degrees as directed and poured in some of the little white plastic balls.  They are supposed to congeal into one piece.

But they never lost their ball shape textures.  So I started again, because the cool thing is, you can re use this product over and over again

I heated the water again, this time making it between 160-170 degrees

These looked a bit more transparent this time and congealed.

So I smooshed them together and tried to make it as smooth as possible, but it was hard to get the ball texture out of them

I went ahead and covered my peace sign anyway, hoping that it would smooth out by applying pressure

While that was setting, I tried again and went a tad hotter.  It did get much more moldable- however, the work time is quick, by the time it cools enough to handle it, and you begin to work it smooth, it begins to harden.

When the plastic was cool, I tried to remove my mold.  it stuck to the polymer a bit, and it did NOT make a smooth mold at all.  As you can see- it never lost that ball like texture- and the sample I did in polymer on the lower right side is terrible

So, even though I think this is a cool product, and it is amazingly strong, not a fan of it for molds.  I will find a use for it, but it was way more trouble then it was worth.  I ended using my good old trust two part silicone molds.

I actually have an article in the current issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry on making molds with two part silicone.
(I am also honored to be the Designer Collection in the current issue).  So grab it if you want to have a copy of my mold article- or take a peek at the issue because I was so happy with the pieces they picked to be showcased in the
Designer Collection (12 pages of my jewelry!  squeeee!).

You can pick up the current issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry here, or at some local art and craft stores as well as Barnes and Noble.

I know I haven't been blogging much lately, so I hope you don't mind that I crammed like 3 blogs into one!!!!

Christmas is in 3 days, and I know everyone is just mad busy!  I truly hope you enjoy your holiday, no matter what you celebrate, may it be filled with love, and family and friends, peace and wellness.

small metal pieces - 2014 mjd

we live in a troubled world
we live in a beautiful world
we live in a world where each one of us makes a difference.

some people do it quietly
some people forcefully
but all do it courageously.

find your way.

we notice the light most
when it's dark.

we notice peace most
when there is chaos and unrest.

but each should be constant
however else the conditions might be.

simple things can carry great impact.

i try to hone my pieces so that messages
are clearly stated
and the wearer will feel 'more' for having them.

i have this hope that my physical act of making marks in metal
sends the message out into the ether
like a chant in hammer strikes.

the new addition of scallops
represents the way things can radiate -
all those good things we can choose to put
out into the world.

the shining sterling orbs
are physical representations
of light and self realization.

peace, love, kindness, compassion, grace
coupled with accountability
abstract in nature,
but ever so real

and ever so needed now.

the recipients of the 2014 nobel peace prize were announced yesterday -
one is the youngest ever. you can read about them and be inspired here

and might i share these words with you
they come from a young holocaust victim - etty hillesm

ultimately we have just one moral duty:
to reclaim large areas of peace in ourselves,
more and more peace,
and to reflect it towards others,
and the more peace there is in us,
the more peace there will be in our troubled world.

guest post - ersi marina

On 3 September I was asked by Mary Jane Dodd to write a guest entry to this blog.  I was excited and thankful for the opportunity, and I am happy to be here with you all.

My name is Ersi Marina SamarĂ¡.  I was born and grew up in Athens, Greece and I have been living in Spain for the last 31 years.  I studied drawing and painting in Athens, and photography in Barcelona.  I also love literature, so I attended creative writing courses for five years during the nineties.  I got some short stories published in literary magazines.  Through the years I have learned as much from my own experimentations and from the work of artists I admire as from my studies and books.  You could say I am 50% self-taught and I certainly keep learning new things about my art and myself every day.

between words and fortune

I am constantly attracted to new techniques and media, and sometimes I need to step back from my work so that I can take everything in.  I like working with watercolours, India ink and graphite, though I also use acrylic inks and gesso, and collaged elements.

Lately I have been incorporating new materials to my work, particularly fabrics.  I am still a beginner in textile art and I have a lot to learn, but fabrics, their colours and textures, their patterns and history, have always fascinated me, so I think they are in my work to stay.

contemporary embroidery

Many things inspire me, physical objects, images or even ideas. But everything goes through the filter of my feelings. I can be very cerebral analyzing a finished work, but I need to create with feeling, establishing a deeper communication with my work, listening to it and trying to satisfy its needs.

sometimes outside

I usually avoid strong visual statements that seem to cry out their message.  I prefer whispers to shouts, suggestions to commands, serenity to tumult.  But I admit I also like contrasts.  Life is full of contradictions, people too.  Sometimes trying to express these contrasts and contradictions in my work is all too tempting.

In 2011 I became very interested in book art, especially artists' books.  That is an area yet to explore and I crave the time necessary to do it.

december reflections

mary jane dodd

wishing you

and oh so much love...

a contemplative time of year...

the solstice has past and the season of joy and giving is upon us...

the darkness seems to intensify introspection...

from one who has spent christmases (and other holidays) alone while the kids are with their dad - i extend light and love...

if you don't have anyone to love in your reach, love from afar...

or how about trying an exercise in self love...

immersing yourself in whatever feeds your passion...

start putting out into the universe the things you want in your life...

this has easily been one of the most challenging years of my life - but when you stay open (and practice gratitude), the balance comes into play... and so i have also had one of the most love-filled and beautiful years... i have had people extend friendship to me in ways that leave me awestruck...

i am humbled...

and thankful...

and i wish for you love - it is the energy of life...

live it, breathe it, share it, be it...

work as meditation

'there is no enlightenment outside of
daily life.'
~ thich nhat hanh
making components for me is mindfulness at its best...

while one gets into a meditative 'flow'

conscious choices are being made

and a perfect balance is struck...

 hours passing by with purpose
until night when you look back and know that your time was well spent
in more ways than one...

wishing you peace this season...

a bounty of peace, love and happy...

'walk as if you are kissing the earth with your feet.'
~ thich nhat hahn

and when you do, your heart soars and you feel lighter than air...

i am most happy when i am connected and feeling at peace (a constant mindful practice)...

(how cute is this?)

thank you so much to the people that not only envision such wonderful things, but learn how to most beautifully make them manifest...
