Patina this.... patina that.... colors!!!

This is MaryAnn. Today was Barbara's turn to post, but due a small plane crashing into her neighbors yard last night, she has no electricity (and I am sure she is a bit shaken up). Sadly, the people in the plane did not survive. So even though we do not know them, please take a moment to remember them in your thoughts, prayers, etc. Any tragedy like this effects so many people.

Here is a quick link about how to achieve different patina colors that was shared with me at a show this past weekend. I tried it without the correct proportions and these came out with a goldish color.

Your metal should be thoroughly clean. Wash, or use an ultrasonic, to cleanse off surface dirt and oil, then rinse with clean water. Brass brushing the surface is perfectly acceptable, and provides more surface tooth. The big secret is the addition of two mordants to enhance and stabilize the colors. I usually use salt and ammonia. The recipe I use most frequently is:

• 1 small piece of liver of sulfur
• about 1/4 inch in diameter
• 2 C. hot water
• 1 Tbsp. clear household ammonia
• 1 tsp. salt

Mix the salt and ammonia with the liver-of-sulfur

I thought it was very cool and something you can easily do with home ingredients along with liver of sulfur.  I still have to try it with the proportional ingredients.
