I learned something about me today....

by MaryAnn Carroll

- It's early Sunday morning and the first thing I learned upon waking up is that I'm alive another day and grateful for that...

- And yesterday, after I learned that I was happy to be alive... (since I think we should all be happy for that each and every day that we have)...

- and the day progressed...

- I learned ....
- that my fingers heal rather quickly when burned...
- that I am old enough to know better when it comes to getting my fingers burned...
- that, yes, I am probably the messy-est project making person that I know...
- that must be why it doesn't bother me when I am doing projects with my 12 year old students and they are almost as messy about it as me...
- that it is okay to be the way that I am and as long as I'm not hurting anyone..... :O)
- that everything requires practice...
- that Barbara Lewis has given me the opportunity to practice...
- that beginnings are always a little more challenging...
- that I get better at things if I stay at it...

- that it is okay to mess up as long as you learn from it...
- that if you burned your finger twice, you probably didn't learn anything from the first burn...
- that with everything I was able to purchase on Barbara's website, I could create something that I have never tried before...

-that the first bunch of times, it just wasn't looking quite right....

-that persistence pays off...

-that 1 successful bead is all it took to keep me wanting to go back for more...

-that I'm not Barbara Lewis, but I bet I'll get better at this if I keep on practicing...

-that I liked these little ones...  I saved those until the end of my enameling session...

-that I think that they look pretty cool with a couple of my ceramic disks...

So.....there you have it....I've tried something new, and I'm going to try it again...

What might you be trying that you haven't attempted yet when...

Ditto ditto ditto....etc etc!!! Good stuff MaryAnn I'm in the middle of that very same process. I LOVE that small bead (where did you get it?) and the earrings you made with your ceramic discs are PERFECT!!!

I like your little firing station too, I need to improve my space!

these came out great! i love enameling - just need a bit more space where i work... and i really like yours...
careful with the burning - i do that too often when i am working with the torch - has more to do with impatience than stupidity (though it is stupid to be impatient when working with very hot things!)

Thanks! Bill made the little torch station with fire bricks...I'm not sure if the fire bricks are a must, but I'm pretty sure they are when I have a torch!! All of the beads came from Barbara's website......

OMG! I'M SO HAPPY! These are great Mary Ann! The first time you touched clay, did you end up with something you could use ... much less wear with pride! I doubt it ... Keep going ... it's just more of the same ... and then you start noticing neat stuff and making connections ... you'll never get bored!

It was a blast and DEFINITELY addicting! What I really liked was the instant gratification :O)

Pretty! Really turned out great and I'm glad that you told the story of perseverance! I need to be reminded of that often~~

That's fantastic and I love this post. It's all about persistence isn't it?

Well the old saying still rings true--'If at first you don't succeed...'

I love your beads and can see how this would become addictive. I so want to learn the process but not ready to fork over money for more tools. Someday, though......

I'm trying to impress upon my daughter the need for patience and that try again attitude you've expressed here....but it is hard, isn't it? I do so love what you're cooking up with Barbara's cool enamels and all! Keep it up, you sure don't have far to go!

Hi, I just found your blog through your winnings at Urbandon.
i have to disagree with you though that I think I am the messiest project person ever.
I can see that I'm going to have fun perusing your blog.

Thanks for all of the encouragement! I do have to say that I should have included some from the first dozen..... not pretty! My first thought was, "Oh, this jus isn't for me!" and then I thought, "Just one more try!" 20 tries later, I was getting the hang of it!
