Playing with Palettes.....

Like Mary Jane mentioned yesterday, I don't often use color palettes to inspire my work. While I am a vivid and avid use of color, I generally rely on my own intuition or the properties of the paint I am using to inform my beads.

Spending the last week in Pennsylvania where I was born and raised, I was struck by the lush and vivid greens that are so different from my normal landscape in subtropical Florida, that I took some photos of some of my favorite colors and textures from Western Pennsylvania. Putting these through the simple color pattern generator at Big Huge Labs, I easily extracted some new beautiful colors to inspire me long after I go back to Florida.

Here are just a couple I whipped up this weekend:

Do you ever make your own color palettes?

Are you more inspired by using color palettes created by others? or by creating your own?

I don't know how everyone makes these color pallettes? is it through a program? I love when I see the pictures with their colors pulled out. that being said, I am not one to follow instructions, or color pallettes, but I am sure they get lodged in my head somewhere and re-appear later.

i have never done that but i love the idea of it... and i always admire the ones that others create - the way you just did... i think it is a really interesting concept - to break down something you are drawn to as a whole... it is much the way a painter has to approach a project, i would imagine...

I have never made my own color palette, but it looks fascinating. Maybe if I get myself back into ceramic bead making after my loooooonnnnnnggggg break, I will come back to this post and check it out in more depth!

I just love using color palettes! Brandi Hussey has a free photoshop template that will allow you to make your own. I love going to Design Seeds blog to see what new palettes that Jessica Colaluca has to share and I also follow other palette inspired blogs like Color Collective and Wear Palettes. I have hosted my annual Challenge of Color each November and last year I used the Design Seeds palettes. This year I am cooking up my own palettes based on something pretty darn cool! You will have to wait until November to check it out! But until then, the free books that you can pick up from the paint store always have great combos if you don't know where else to turn. Most of my pieces are inspired by a color palette someplace. Enjoy the day! Erin
