There are No Afterthoughts in Good JewelryDesign !

by Staci Louise Smith

Those of us who make jewelry, especially those of us who use beads and gems, I know we can get caught up in the fun of the BEADS!  The colors, the textures, the flow- GAH!

For me, that is absolutely my favorite part.  Designing the layout of a piece and fondling, I mean, playing with, I mean, laying out the beads is where I would like to stop sometimes.

But we can't.  We cannot spend all that time, all that energy creating a wonderful piece, and then throw it on some cheap, un-attractive chain.  Chain, cannot, and should not, be an afterthought.

Now, this rule can apply to clasps too, as well as many other things.  Today, we discuss chain.

I am a stickler about chain in jewelry.  I think the right chain can either make or break a piece.  I think it has to be the right thickness or daintiness to accentuate your piece just so.  I also think, that once you find some chains you LOVE, they will not become an afterthought, but you will find joy in using them in your work, all most as much as the beads.

One artist whom always has fun new chains is Lorelei Eurto.  She uses chain as part of her designs almost all the time.

Here is one of her latest designs featuring a few different chains to keep it interesting!

I also LOVE the choice of rosary chain that our own Karen McGovern used to create these awesome sugar skulls.  This was definitely part of the plan for her piece.

Of course, if you are into a lot of work and torture (I kid....sort of) you can make your own chain.  It is really the best way to be sure it compliments your work, but it takes time, and tools and patience.  Here is one that I made (I didn't make too many 'cause I know the torture of it....lol)

Another person who has made awesome chain to accentuate her work is Nikki Z. of Love Root.

Here is a gorgeous all chain necklace (that I heard she is keeping for herself- and trust me, when you have made chain, and you can't charge a million $$$ for it, you want to keep it!)

And here is that same design of chain used to accentuate a piece made with her own handmade beads!  See?  The chain can really make a piece!!!  Don't skimp on it!

Now, not everyone has the set up (or desire) to make their own chain.  So we are forced to shop for it.  So, what do you look for?

One thing to consider when picking out chain, is how sturdy it is.  I have had too many chains that could be pulled apart by hand- and to me, that is just not acceptable.

Sometimes I prefer my chain to be soldered links, but at times, if it is REALLY strong and well made, I like the open links.
My favorite place for open link chain is www.rings-things.com.

I use their more substantial chains, since my designs are substantial.  At first I was hesitant to try them, because they are open links, and in the past, these have come apart too easily.  I have not found this to be the case here- AT ALL.  I have to open them deliberately for them to come apart.  Why I like this???  Well, I can attach things by opening the links like jump rings- I can adjust the length of things the same way too.  I can even use the links themselves as jump rings!  Plus, their antique brass chains are plated over brass, so, I like the fact it is not some mystery base metal underneath.

Now- for my fanciest stuff i like to use a solid brass chain, and I cannot say enough good things about www.rishashay.com

Not only do they have handmade solid brass chain, but the chain is as simple or as fancy as you can get!  If you have a design, they have a chain to match it!

I hope you will embrace and enjoy creating your pieces from start to finish.  And if chain is not what is right for your piece, then by all means, use leather, or fabric, or whatever it needs.  Just make sure its a deliberate thought.  After all, you put all that time and effort into a piece, make sure its wrapped up in a manner that will only make it more amazing!

Always Evolving

by Staci Smith

Well- I am in show prep mode once again, but this time it's jewelry shows!  Each year to try to find a new direction to go in, just a little bit.  I have been very drawn to ancient, tribal, ethnic looking items lately.  So I wanted to add some brass to my jewelry line.  I have used it a little bit here and there, like in these Boho Hoop style earrings last year.

Brass Boho Hoops

I was never really a fan of gold, and yet, somehow, I am now being drawn to the richness of this golden yellow metal.

Along with adding brass this year, I started to make some of my own chains for charm style necklaces.  Yesterday, I finally completed one, so I am sharing it with you, since it is all I have worked on for a couple days!!!!

I really like the results of both the chunky chain charm style and the richness of the brass.  I will certainly be making more!!!!  I think that the brass also begs for color to be added, and so, I am beginning to add more pops of color to my work.  Always evolving.  Not sure if its a process or just because I get bored easily!  Either way, it keeps things fresh.

What is your favorite metal to work with?

Is there a metal you have been wanting to try, but just haven't done it yet?

Trends in Jewelry

by Staci L. Smith

There are often trends in jewelry.  I think as a designer its good to at least know what they are, and see if its something you are interested in applying to your work at all.

For example, I have always worked very short when it comes to necklaces, but noticed that long necklaces, and chain seemed to be "in" this year.  So I made some longer, adjustable pieces- careful to keep my style while doing so.  I loved it.   It felt good to branch out, and they were a hit!

Another trend I have noticed is owls.  They are everywhere.  They are on handbags, and on iphones, on pillow cases and school bags.  I often have people ask me for animal jewelry, and its just not something I really do.  However, I have seen lots of really cute owls out there.  Still, its not me, and so, I have not purchased a single owl art bead.  Well, that changed when I saw this one.

I couldn't hold out any longer. I knew this one was calling me. I can't wait to get it and create something trendy- with my spin on it.

Here are some other super cute, cool and fun owl beads and jewelry.

So, do you dive right into trends, or just observe from afar until something strikes you?  Or, do you ignore them all together and only pursue that voice inside?

The Art Bead Love Tour

By Staci L. Smith

We here at Love My Art Jewelry are always trying to think of new ways to spread the love of handmade, and the message to create handmade with handmade.  So we put our brains together and came up with this idea, the Art Bead Love Tour.

The Art Bead Love Tour is an ongoing project to spread the love of handmade to new and exciting places.  It’s a way to reach people who may have never stumbled upon our blog on their own, and give them a chance to share the love of handmade.  We chose to use a chain to link beads as a symbol of  how this project links us all together~ in our unity to stand behind handmade.

We have filled one and a half feet of chain with handmade beads, charms and pendants, donated by our own Love My Art Jewelry Group.  There are 60 beads on this chain, worth approximately $450.  It includes ceramic, glass, polymer, various metals and metal clay beads.  It’s a true tribute to handmade in all its beady glory!  These beads are ready to go on tour…….the Art Bead Love Tour!  This tour is basically an art bead swap, which will go on and on and on.
Here is how it works.

PLEASE.......
....please read the entire post before entering).

We will have a giveaway for this chain (how to enter is explained at the end of the post)

The Details:

1.    The winner of the chain will be allowed to take up to 30 beads from this chain.  They will then replace each bead they took, with another handmade bead, charm or pendant of equal quality.  It is so important that the quality of the beads be maintained, so that we can keep the Art Bead Love Tour alive.  We want to share consistent quality with the next winner.  If you make your own handmade beads or components, it’s a great way to get your beads into the world for people to try them out, or, if you hoard  collect art beads, it’s a great way to share your collection and get some new additions as well.  (Art Beads should be handmade by an artist, and not mass produced, such as Hill Tribes Silver beads or others like them).  Remember the focus is on creating handmade with handmade and beads/components taken should be replaced with beads/components that are made by an individual not an organization.

2.    The winner will post pictures of what was taken and what was added, in order to keep an account of the chains progress and to keep our followers drooling.  Please be sure to give credit to the bead artists as well.

3.    The winner will then have a giveaway, just like this one, to keep passing the chain on and on.  Rules can be copied and pasted from here.

4.    When you repost your giveaway (remember you can copy and paste from here)-a list should be added to show where the chain has gone, with links to each previous blog.  Ultimately, this will end up being a very long list!

For example:

Look where the chain has been……

5.    Chain must be shipped to its new home via Priority Small Flat Rate box with delivery confirmation.  Please package it carefully.
6.    There will be a button on the Love My Art Jewelry Website that links to the current blog and giveaway- so if you have the chain, it will link to your blog, that way our followers can have another chance to win it.
7.    You MUST exchange your beads and have your giveaway completed within two weeks of receiving the chain.

(Please please please, if you can not adhere to the above rules, do not enter the giveaway at this time.  It will go on and on and you can always enter at a later date.)  There will be a button on the side bar of our blog so that you can track where the chain currently is.

OK- How to Enter:

1.     You must have a blog to enter.

2.     Leave a comment below (make sure your email is linked to your blog or leave it in the comment.  Entries without emails will not qualify)

3.    Share on Facebook, Twitter or your blog for extra chances to win.  Leave a comment for each way you share, with a link if possible.

4.    Winner will pay shipping and will be billed through paypal-small priority flat rate box with delivery confirmation $6.00.

5.    Open only to our readers in the United States- due to problems with tracking and shipping overseas (sorry).  Please note- I am having a small giveaway on my blog for our international friends only!!!  So hop over to enter.

6.    Check back here on November 30th to see if you’ve won.
