Definitely a Struggle....

I am not quite sure why the thought of making something asymmetrical makes me tense. I have made many attempts only to find myself pulling the creation apart. When I make beads, however, I am very different. I can just make random cuts, sizes, shapes, etc. and enjoy it. I get lost in it.....

When it comes time to use them though, I find myself matching up the closest ones. Ughhhhh!

Planning ahead for a design.... Yes, not perfectly symmetrical, but symmetrical nevertheless....

So, I have started to try and do something a little different..... not easy for me. Even writing about it causes some sort of chemical change in my body. My throat gets a little tight, my hands a little white and if I were the kind of person that sweats, I am sure it would be pouring down my face.

So, I've taken some baby steps...

These actually became a necklace..... yes, all in one necklace!

And a couple of bracelets with one different bead!

And, one of the things I find I have a little easier time with is finding beads whose colors blend together.

How are you at asymmetry? Are you like me? An asymmetry wannabe?

I love the look and plan to practice. If I could only let my mind go like I do when I make beads, I think it might be easier.

Help!

MaryAnn Carroll - could you tell?

I guess our inborn attraction to symmetry is difficult to overcome. It is a natural survival instinct according to anthropologists. I definitely find it challenging to design asymmetrically and usually have to settle for revolving or replacing a small section only.

I am much more attracted to an asymmetrical design, as my eye/mind looks and finds more interesting parts to it. However, like you, I too struggle to achieve it in my own designs. This boot camp is just what I need.

I am a big fan of asymmetry when it's done well. I love the look of your bracelet with one mismatched bead! It draws you in for a second look. I'm a beadmaker, and every set I used to make consisted of precisely matched pairs… these days I'm drawn to sets of beads that are all different. I guess the mood changes...

I also have a very difficult time with asymmetrical designs. I forced myself to do a few last year ... what really helped me was to gather all the beads that I knew I wanted to put into the necklace and then I put them in a paper bag. I pulled them out one at a time and that one went on the string next. I really had to fight hard to resist taking it apart or putting a bead back into the bag. It worked, but it was a struggle.

Definitely an asymmetry wannabe, I'm the same way very free when I make my individual beads but blocked at how to make a random design work.

I love the idea of putting them in a paper bag! I am going to try that :)

Hahahahahahahahaha! Mary Ann, this reminds me of my best friend. I think it affects her physically when jewelry isn't symmetrical. Good job with the baby steps!
