There are often trends in jewelry. I think as a designer its good to at least know what they are, and see if its something you are interested in applying to your work at all.
For example, I have always worked very short when it comes to necklaces, but noticed that long necklaces, and chain seemed to be "in" this year. So I made some longer, adjustable pieces- careful to keep my style while doing so. I loved it. It felt good to branch out, and they were a hit!
Another trend I have noticed is owls. They are everywhere. They are on handbags, and on iphones, on pillow cases and school bags. I often have people ask me for animal jewelry, and its just not something I really do. However, I have seen lots of really cute owls out there. Still, its not me, and so, I have not purchased a single owl art bead. Well, that changed when I saw this one.
I couldn't hold out any longer. I knew this one was calling me. I can't wait to get it and create something trendy- with my spin on it.
Here are some other super cute, cool and fun owl beads and jewelry.
So, do you dive right into trends, or just observe from afar until something strikes you? Or, do you ignore them all together and only pursue that voice inside?

What a great post! I love the owl pendant you got from Lisa Peters! Perfect for your style, but still owl trendy.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don't follow trends. I just create what strikes me. Luckily, sometimes I find myself being in trend not even knowing it. I just recently wondered if I should start paying more attention to trending and work in a few pieces??

Thanks so much Staci, love all the owls. I think the Lisa Peters Owl is my fav too. Look forward to seeing what you create with it!
ReplyDeleteLove your post, I have been seeing alot of owls too, I have bought a couple but then have been stuck with what to do with them. Flowers are more my style! And I do love long necklaces!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post. I don't really follow the trends, although I keep reading how important it is for jewelry artists to know what is "in". It may be true, but at this point, I just follow my instincts when it comes to making a piece. Love the owls that you posted and the pendant you are waiting on is adorable. Can't wait to see how you use it!

ReplyDeleteI am with you Linda. I LOVE fashion (though you wouldn't think it to see how I dress;) so I see the trends that way. but if it isn't something I'd do, or like, I don't do it. At times though, i really like something going on in the fashion world and want to try it. Loving the long stuff with lots of chain- and layers.
ReplyDeletei finally caved with some long necklaces - they are growing on me as long as i layer them with shorter ones - some habits die hard!
